This week’s church planter spotlight is focused on Jesse Hales. Jesse will be beginning a new church plant in Round Rock, TX. We asked him ten questions that will let you know a little more about him.

Tell us a little about your family.

My wife Rebecca and I were close friends in high school and graduated together in 2000. I moved away to seminary and she pursued a career in pediatric nursing after attending Central Baptist College. We reconnected about eight years later when she was going back to grad school for her masters and I was raising funds to move to Haiti as a missionary. We have been married for 9 years now. Colton (5) was born in Costa Rica while we were in language school preparing to go to the Dominican Republic as missionaries though the national association. Eli (Elisha 4) and Lydia (2) were both born in the Dominican.

How long have you been planting in your mission field?

We are getting ready to start in September.

What do you see is unique about your mission field?

Round Rock is growing into quite the melting-pot of people groups. It is definitely more liberal than most of the rest of Texas. As I’ve begun to connect with other pastors in the area I have been met with excitement and open arms. As the population consistently grows faster than the churches, the competition between churches has seemed to vanish.

What people or distinct groups do you see in your field?

There is a wide range of groups within the population. The majority are middle to upper-middle class causation. Roughly 40% of the population speaks Spanish as their mother tongue. Tech giants like Dell, Google, Samsung, and others are major employers in the area so finding someone who is smarter than I am on computers is never hard to do.

What does your daily time with God look like?

I like to get up before the rest of the family and spend some good quality time with the Lord praying, doing my Bible study and, if I have time, listening to a sermon. Throughout the day, I’ve gotten into the habit of listening to one of the Bibles I have on Audible while I’m driving or doing something else like that which allows me to listen to it. My favorite part of any day is the time I get to help the kids individually as they work through their Bible study plans.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I’m not the best at taking free time to myself, but, when I do, I would rather be outside. I always love hunting or fishing, but haven’t taken the time or money to invest in it. If I find a road I haven’t been down before, I like to take it and see where it leads. We like to go geocaching some. I also like to play around trying to learn how to cook new things.

What is your favorite theme ride or subject?

My favorite theme ride is the one someone else is on. I’ve lost my lunch on a Ferris wheel before, so I’m going to say give me a lazy river to float on and call me good.

Where is your favorite place in the world?

That’s a very hard question. I’ve been blessed to see a lot of places and loved most of them. When the kids haven’t had too much sugar I’d say with the family. The prettiest place I’ve seen was the ancient ruins in Cambodia. The Rockies are breathtaking. There are certain mountain tops in Haiti that still have a special place in my memory. I would much rather be in a river in the mountains than on a beach in the sun.

Share one challenge you are facing right now and how we can pray for you.

As I write this we are still in the process of moving to and settling in Round Rock from the Dominican. So far this move has been challenging for the kids as they face the unknown and begin to adjust to a culture they are not really used to. Pray that we can adjust to the states and to Round Rock well. Pray also that God will lead more people to join us in this ministry here.

Share one praise you are excited about that we can share with others.

We recently had a friend tell us they feel led to move to Round Rock to join us in ministry. That, and the principal of a local elementary school has invited us to adopt the school as a ministry to love on the staff and students.

A word from your missions office

I ran across this verse last week, “Where no oxen [are], the trough [is] clean; But much increase [comes] by the strength of an ox” (Proverbs 14:4 NKJV).  

I’ve read over it many times but I haven’t seen it. It is a blessing to me because it speaks of our servent roll of taking care of missionaries. I see several things in this passage.

1. We can have messy and productive ministry or clean and fruitless ministry but we can’t have neat, tidy, safe and productive ministry. I know that’s a lot to take in, but isn’t it true? I love Solomon’s logic: “You gotta pick between a clean barn or a productive crop.” The Lord has called each of us to roll up our sleeves and get dirty beside real people making disciples of real people. Real ministry is messy!
2. We are responsible for keeping the trough full. Missionaries should engage lostness by bringing the Gospel and taking nothing from the Gentiles (3 John 7). We are making sure that called men and their families can eat and live while they share the gospel.
3. We have to make sure that the missionary families are cared for. I grew up on a dairy farm. Dairy cattle and oxen have this in common, they poop where they eat and stay. The stable and manger will soon get unsanitary and compromise the animals health if it isn’t regularly cleaned.  Your missionaries need training, accountability, fellowship, prayer, resourcing and encouragement in order to stay healthy. (Paul received all these things from the churches that supported him.) This is why they have a sponsor church, Texas Missions team, your church, and you.

Ironically, I spent my early life shoveling and cleaning the barn. God has me in that same roll now. He has given me and the Texas Missions team the burden to take care of missionaries so we can see:

• That we see an aggressive multiplication movement of churches who make disciples, equip and release leaders, and start churches for the glory of God and the advancement of his Kingdom Mission
• That each new mission begin with a plan to begin three new churches in their first 10 years
• That pastors and churches of the association be encouraged and equipped to start new churches
• That we connect, evaluate, identify and train new prospective church planters

There has been a big change in the West Texas Network.  We have a full-time network leader…me! I recently resigned my pastorate at Fifth Street, Levelland to focus on reaching west Texas for Christ. It wasn’t as easy as that makes it sound. I love my church and I love our people. But God has grown the network faster than I ever could have expected and the balance between the church and the network was more than I could do. I have learned over the years that if it’s right for me to be in one place, then it’s also right for me to not be in the another. That gives me great confidence that God is going to be just as active at Fifth Street in our new season there as He will be in the network and our next steps there. I am now able to focus on getting the members of our plants the training they need to reach their communities. I am also working with several pastors in other towns to get them the same training! It’s pretty exciting to see God’s glory returning to towns that haven’t seen it in so many years! Please continue to for new contacts in new towns as well as for partnerships with pastors of little churches that still have a heart to reach their communities. It’s a big work but we serve a big God!

Prayer Needs:

Pray for new multiplication circles that are starting with our plants as well as with several existing churches. Also, pray for a person of peace in the town of Sundown as well as the young man I met in Lazbuddie.

Easter Sunday we celebrated the grand opening of our new building. It is great to have a place to call home and no longer moving from one building to the next. A lot of time and energy went into getting the building ready for Easter Sunday. On Easter Sunday we had about 130 in attendance and had some give their life to Christ! We celebrate what God is doing at The Bridge. We seek to use this new building as a tool to reach new people. We also were able to partner with a local school and host an Easter egg hunt allowing us to make many new connections. Continue to pray for us as we continue to strive to reach our community and build relationships with those around us. Thank you for your continued support and prayers.

We have been working towards bringing individuals and families together to experience life in Christian community. Why is this so important?

Jesus, who is the head of the church body, gave us the command to make disciples of all nations by baptizing them in the name of the Triune God and teach them to obey all things Jesus taught. If we want to teach the disciples to obey everything that Christ has commanded us, that includes practicing the “one-another-commands” taught by Jesus and reminded by the apostles (Jn. 6:43; Ro. 12:6; Jn. 13:34; Ro. 12:10). It is not possible to obey Jesus without being part of a local church. Jesus desires that his disciples grow in love, holiness, unity and humility as they live in community practicing the “one-another-commands.” It is by obeying those commands in the context of the local church that Christ is followed, disciples mature and reproduce. In the biblical model ministry happens in life and discipleship happens in community.

Please pray with us that God would bring people into reconciliation with Him and unity with His family.

We must continue to reach out to the community. We can never grow complacent or allow ourselves to become weary in well-doing. It’s not about numbers as much as it is about reaching the lost for Christ. “For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of man also shall be ashamed of him, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels” (Mark‬ 8:38).

In last two months, I don’t have new families except two, Reda’s family, and Ali’s family, and three youth girls Mariam( Marie ) Noor and Aseel. I knew them through a picnic by a school for Arab refugees. l was  invited to share my testimony with them. It was a great day with a big challenge. There were about 85 Adults and more than 150 children. I communicated with them after the picnic through the phone, and I took appointments from them.

I invited two of the families I knew before to the picnic with their children. They were so happy and they asked me to keep doing activities like this.

This week’s church planter spotlight is focused on Neptaly Molina. Neptaly is the lead planter at Iglesia Bautista Mission in Nacogdoches, TX. We asked him ten questions that will let you know a little more about him.

Tell us a little about your family.

My name is Neptaly Molina and I was born in the State of Falcón in Venezuela. I met Manuela Perdomo and we married on August 18, 1989, in the City of Maracaibo, Venezuela. We have two children: Marianne Naarai Molina Perdomo who departed to heaven in 2014, and Neptaly Josué. We come to this great country in July of 2016.

How long have you been planting in your mission field?

We have been serving in the city of Nacogdoches, Texas since 2017 planting a new work by the grace of God according to his will. Prior to this, I planted and pastored several churches in my native Venezuela.

What do you see is unique about your mission field?

The city of Nacogdoches has a good Hispanic population, roughly 100 families that constitutes a fertile ground for a mission field. I am forming a new mission in this place with a group of 25 people including young people and children mostly through personal evangelism through prior appointment at home and informed visits.

What people or distinct groups do you see in your field?

My focus is with the Hispanic families. This is the priority for me, but I am open to the Spirit. If he directs me and indicates that another culture must be gained, then God will give me the training to also influence another culture. I do not close myself to performing multicultural work.

What does your daily time with God look like?

My time with God is a priority. During my quiet time with God, I have learned more through my walk with God. In this important time, I dedicate it in prayer, in studying the Bible, meditating on it, listening to God, to show me his will, where he is working to join him, and let him work through me. My success depends on that delightful time in his presence as he says in Matthew 6:6. I also use this time to share with my family, something we call the family altar. We sing songs, hymns, read and practice as a group what we read of the word. This is important and of value to me. Without this devotional time with God, missions would be a failure.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I like to share with my family, visit parks or places of distraction, read books, and study English. I have challenged myself that, after finishing my associate in divinities, I will study that new language for me. I also enjoy studying, make sermons, and making studies among others.

What is your favorite subject?

I have several which are: How can I please God all the time? What is heaven like? How to achieve wisdom? How can I be a blessing to other people?

Where is your favorite place in the world?

My favorite places in the world are Israel, Venezuela, and the United States.

Share one challenge you are facing right now and how we can pray for you.

The main things I would like prayer for are: to win more Hispanic families for the Church that we are carrying out; for the leadership I am preparing to get involved in evangelism and missionary work; for my documents (Work Permit and Social Security) that immigration grants us that with the help of God; for my theological studies in the BMA Seminary in Jacksonville; for my family in Venezuela and the spiritual, political, and economic situation there that God would take out that communist regime that rules there and transform the government and opposition; for peace in the hearts of all the people of the world; and to see this country (USA) surrendered at the feet of Christ adoring him.

Share one praise you are excited about that we can share with others.

I have great expectations in the work that God will do through the members who attend the mission in Nacogdoches. I love the work I do, when I can be a blessing to others, when I speak to the people of God, and when I can help them or be useful and serve in this country in some way. I am excited to be able to do something great for God.

This week’s church planter spotlight is focused on Cristian Martinez. Cristian is the lead planter at Grace Harvest Baptist Church in Lubbock, TX. We asked him ten questions that will let you know a little more about him.

Tell us a little about your family.

I am originally from Mexico City. In 2016, I married my beautiful, Romanian wife. We have one little daughter named Joellen who was born in the US, adding a third nationality to the family. Now we are joyfully expecting a baby boy. We believe God has uniquely made us a multi-national family in order to make disciples of different nationalities and backgrounds. We enjoy time of family worship, traveling, and eating.

How long have you been planting in your mission field?

We moved to Lubbock at the end of 2017, began to make friends, and learn about the city.

What do you see is unique in your mission field?

By God’s grace, Lubbock has several churches that are faithfully preaching the gospel of Jesus and making disciples. Nevertheless, there are many neighborhoods in the city that have been marginalized. There are men, women, and children living in these neighborhoods that lack resources such as decent education, jobs, transportation, and healthcare. Most importantly, there is lack of gospel preaching churches that are making disciples of Jesus and living out the gospel of Jesus among them. There are also around 3,000 internationals that came to Texas Tech University. The nations are coming to us and we must give them the treasure of the gospel.

What different people or groups do you see in your field?

We have a variety of ethnicities and Texas Tech University brings international students from many different countries.

How is your daily time with God?

Usually, I schedule an hour in the morning in my calendar that says “enjoying God.” I want to be reminded every morning that the greatest gift I received as a result of Jesus’s atonement is a reconciled relationship with God to enjoy and glorify Him. I read the Bible and pray. I either memorize a verse, concept or application of the passage to meditate and pray throughout the day.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to spend time with family, friends, exercise, and reading.

Fun question! What is your favorite theme ride?

I haven’t ride one in the US, but I have tried all of them in Six Flags, Mexico City.

Where is your favorite place in the world?

Romania is awesome! It has beautiful natural places like mountains, water falls, rivers, and plains. It also has great architecture, castles, fortresses, art, and great food (still Mexican food is the best).

Share a challenge you are facing right now and how we can pray for you.

We are moving closer to the neighborhood that we are reaching in Lubbock. Pray for the moving and meeting new neighbors. Pray for opportunities to preach the gospel and great fruit.

Share a praise you are excited about that we can share with others.

God is giving us some laborers that are committed to make disciples together with us. Also, a student from China confessed Jesus as the only Savior and God after some weeks of reading the Bible with him, showing him our need to be reconciled to God through Jesus, and how all of Scriptures speak of Him. He came from China not knowing anything about the Bible and God has opened his eyes to receive the truth. Please keep praying for him to be established in the faith and persevere through possible persecution he might face when he goes back to China in a year.

Tell us a little about your family.

My wife, Sandra Lozoya, and I have been married for 27 years. We have three daughters: Janet, 27 years old, Michelle, 23 years old, and Sandra, 21 years old. We have lived in El Paso for 20 years

How long have you been planting in your mission field?

I have been planting 5 months.

What do you see is unique in your mission field?

We have many Hispanic people who prefer to speak English. El Paso is on the border with Mexico and we have people crossing and looking for work. We also have a large U.S. military base here in El Paso.

What different people or groups do you see in your field?

I do not see many different people. El Paso has a bit of everything: Koreans, Chinese, many Hispanics, and Anglos.

How is your daily time with God?

Every day I meet with my family to have a devotional time together. We talk about our plans in the ministry and about our daughters’ issues. In general, it helps us to be united in everything.

What do you like to do in your free time?

To go out with my wife and my daughters to eat, or to walk. To be alone, I like to read a book

What is your favorite subject or theme?

My favorite subjects are comedies and Ghost Hunter.

Where is your favorite place in the world?

My favorite place to live is England.

We are looking to buy a house for the area where we are planting. We are praying that God gives us the best and that it is used to open a family group.

God has blessed us with families coming to Jesus who have taken the step to be baptized. That is reason for joy.

This week’s church planter spotlight is focused on Spencer Simpson. Spencer is the lead planter at Redeemer’s Love in Houston, TX. We asked him ten questions that will let you know a little more about him.

Tell us a little about your family.

I am single right now.

How long have you been planting in your mission field?

I have been the lead planter at Redeemer’s Love for 1 Year and 8 months.

What do you see is unique in your mission field?

Southwest Houston is one of the most diverse areas in the entire United States. There are many immigrant communities surrounding our mission, and a great need for the Gospel to be proclaimed in the midst of them.

What different people or groups do you see in your field?

We have large populations of West African, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Central American, and Middle Eastern immigrants. They tend to stay close together, and there are usually entire apartment complexes and neighborhoods populated by one group.

How is your daily time with God?

My time with the Lord is how I begin my day. I am currently reading through the Gospel of John. I use the time before bed as an opportunity to pray for the church and other things that are coming in the next day and week.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy fishing, reading,  & camping!

What is your favorite theme park ride?

My favorite theme park ride are roller coasters!

Where is your favorite place in the world?

My favorite place is The Lanier Theological Library here in Houston.

Share a challenge you are facing right now and how we can pray for you.

I often get discouraged when a lot of our regular attendees choose other events or leisure time over being at our Sunday service. Prayer would be appreciated for their commitment as well as my patience with them, and with the Lord. Another area is in pushing our regulars (Some soon to be members) to be doing evangelism and making disciples. It has taken 7 months to break down the idea that it’s just the pastor’s job to do those things. I’m praying that their hearts have been prepared by the Word and our guidance to be effective disciple makers.

Six of our regulars are considering membership, and will be attending membership classes in May! We are excited to see them commit beyond just attending and it is very encouraging to see them grow spiritually!

A word from your missions office

The New Testament tells the story of a rapidly expanding church movement. People were being discipled and churches were forming all over the world. We need such a movement in Texas to give every man, woman and child the opportunity to hear about and receive Jesus. Our population is exploding. God is mixing world populations. The nations, tribes and tongues are moving to Texas. The problem is, there are no such movements in any western culture. They exist in other cultures but not the USA or Europe.

Elements of a Kingdom building movement are:

1. An understanding that Jesus is Lord of His church, every believer and His mission
2. Disciple Making- invitation to follow, help in following, and released to follow
3. Missional Impulse-a burden that every man, woman, and child can hear and know Jesus
4. Equipping and releasing leaders
5. Healthy Reproducible Systems
6. Risk and Faith

Contrast that with a Common Western Institutional Model

1. Competing identity and rule
2. Programming
3. Marketing
4. Recruiting and Holding Volunteers
5. Controlling Structures
6. Risk Avoidance

Your Texas missions department seeks to be and promote a movement among the churches we are starting. We are seeing the seeds.

1. We believe Jesus is Lord of each church, this department, each mission, and his mission. Our Value that reflects this is, “Plant unique churches that glorify God while reaching into unique and diverse pockets of lost people.” Our efforts are diverse because we leave room for God to call uniquely gifted and prepared men to reach into unique pockets of lost people.

2. Our mission is to make disciples. Every mission has a disciple making strategy. Our value is, “Plant churches that demonstrate a genuine commitment to multiplying disciples, leaders, and churches.”

3. Our churches share a burden to see the gospel presented and offered to everyone in their reach. Our value is to, “Plant churches to reach the lost.”

4. We recognize that every follower is a minister and proclaimer of the gospel. God has placed them in time, location, relationships in order to make disciples. These people belong to God and he has the right to assign and reassign. The church is to equip and release them for their unique ministry engagement. Again, our value states, “Plant churches that demonstrate a genuine commitment to multiplying disciples, leaders, and churches.” Five of your mission churches have already sent out planting teams. Several existing BMA churches are also currently planting churches. Last week I was blessed to be in a unique send service. Westside Baptist Church in Nacogdoches is currently supporting and hosting the Iglesia Bautista Nuevo Renacer Mission. Last Sunday, the church and mission celebrated together as they laid on hands and sent a missionary from this Hispanic mission to start a new church in Dallas. That is equipping and releasing leaders.

5. We are creating systems that reproduce and are based on sound biblical principals. All of our equipping tools are applicable to any context and we freely give them away. Our value is, “Plant churches with prepared, equipped and cared for church planters.”

6. If God asks us to do it, it will be bigger than us. We will be in over our head. We better walk humbly and dependent, right? We better pray and ask others to pray. The goal below is God sized. It will only be God achieved. Through it God can be glorified and His Kingdom can advance. Like anything that matters, we will only see it come about through prayer, sacrifice, and faith. • That we see an aggressive multiplication movement of churches who make disciples, equip and release leaders, and start churches for the glory of God and the advancement of his Kingdom Mission
• That each new mission begin with a plan to begin three new churches in their first 10 years
• That pastors and churches of the association be encouraged and equipped to start new churches
• That we connect, evaluate, identify and train new prospective church planters

Cross-Work is starting phase 2 of our planting process. We are gearing up for Easter and praying God will send us people who need Him. We are investing and inviting our community to come “Try Something Different” this Easter and give our church a try.

Our heart is focused on making disciples of Christ, and we are overjoyed to see the spiritual progress and growth of the people in our discipleship groups, which are designed to teach them about being a disciple and how to go and make disciples.  Thank you for your continued love, support, and most of all prayers as we seek to make disciples in southwest Houston.

Prayer Needs:

Since we have had a semi-public existence on social media and other platforms we do receive numerous guests. However, often some of these guest seem to be at odds with the churches core values, as well as seem to be primarily focused on self, and are not interested in the mission of Redeemer’s Love. Alongside this we have a good amount of regulars but the idea of committing to a church is difficult for them since many have church hopped for so long. This stems from the challenge of trying to develop a core team on site, rather than coming in with one. The relationships we have built with other churches/ministries will hopefully alleviate some of this concern, as well as solidify a stronger core team that will survive going public unlike past attempts of public launches.

1. Pray for the establishment of the New Renacer Baptist Church of Nacogdoches. Pray for new Hispanic families to win for Jesus Christ.

4. Pray for legal documentation, a work permit and Social Security. On April 14, 150 days will be met, after the traces.
5. Pray for my theological training, Associate and Master’s preparation.

I desire to continue to share with you what we anticipate God doing in Lubbock as we make disciples whose lives are centered on the gospel, passionate for God’s glory, and equipped to live out Jesus’ mission in everything they do.

Through the church’s proclamation and demonstration of the gospel of Jesus, we expect to see God creating new hearts that are passionate for His glory. This transformation will result in new lives that will be equipped to strategically bring the Kingdom of Jesus to their home, workplace, school, neighborhood, the City of Lubbock and through it, the ends of the earth. This vision is inspired by God’s greatness (Habakkuk 2:14), God’s design to use local churches at the center of His eternal plan (Ephesians 3:10), and God’s strategy to spread the gospel in the world (Acts 14:21-23).

Please pray for us in this journey and for more laborers to reap the spiritual harvest in the city.
